Mt Ruapehu (North Island)
Snow reports are also posted daily on the individual ski fields websites. These daily snow reports give you the most current snow and weather conditions, road conditions and chain requirements, boundary and closure information along with which lifts and base lodge facilities are operating and any other pertinent information for the day. We urge you to check out this information before you head up the mountain.
Alternately you can call the National Snow phone for weather reports on 0900 99 SNO (766) costs incurred per minute.
Shuttle Bus Transfers
Regular shuttle services run from Queenstown to Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. A daily shuttle service operates from Wanaka to Treble Cone and Cardrona. As do services from Christchurch or Methven to Mount Hutt.
Open dated transfer vouchers can be prepurchased before leaving home. All you have to do is phone 24 hours in advance and prebook the actual day and time.
Free car parking is available near the base lodge at each ski area. If you have children with you, use the mountain parkingarea drop-off zone. Remember to do a gear check before the car heads to the parking lot! Don’t forget goggles, gloves and sunscreen. It is essential that every vehicle (incl. 4WD) carry chains on all mountain access roads. A chain hire and fitting service is available on The Remarkables and Mt Hutt access roads, but NOT at Coronet Peak which is sealed and rarely requires chains. Treble Cone – chains are not available for hire on the mountain. We urge you to pre-book them with your rental car. Cardrona – Safety crews man the access road and can fit chains for a nominal charge. Lake Ohau and Porters – chains are not available for hire on the mountain. We urge you to pre-book them with your rental car. Mt Ruapehu – the roads are sealed and rarely require chains but safety crews man the access roads and can fit chains for a nominal charge.
Style is an individual thing and we are all for stylish people hitting the slopes.
Here are some practical tips to play around with in your wardrobe:
Dress in layers fit for an alpine environment. Start with a good thermal layer for both your upper and lower body. This will act as a second skin, pulling moisture away from your body and keep you nice and warm. As a second and third layer it is good to wear a long sleeve T-shirt or micro fleece to keep you snug and lastly as an outer layer a good water and windproof jacket and pants. It is essential to take warm, waterproof gloves, a woollen hat, sunscreen and sunglasses or goggles. Because of the reflection of the snow, sunscreen is recommended at all times. These items are not included with clothing hire (for hygiene reasons). If needed they can be purchased from the on-mountain shops.
There are a number of different lift pass options available.
For Learners/Beginners, we recommend avoiding standard lift passes and investing in combo packs that combine equipment hire, lessons and beginner lift passes. Here are some options.
For more experienced skiers these lift pass options exist
Coronet Peak/Remarkables – Queenstown Superpass (exchangeable for sightseeing and attractions)
Cardrona/Treble Cone – OnepassNZ (exchangeable for sightseeing and attractions)
Mt Hutt – Mt Hutt Lift Pass
Porters – Porters Lift Pass
Lake Ohau – Lake Ohau Lift Ppass
Mt Ruapehu – Mt Ruapehu Lift and Activity Pass (exchangeable for sightseeing and attractions)
Lifts generally operate from approx 9am to 4pm daily, weather and snow conditions permitting.
Kids – Free Lift passes
Coronet Peak – 6 years and under
Remarkables and Mt Hutt – 10 years and under
Treble Cone – 5 years and under
Cardrona – 5 years and under
Note: Does not include clothing or equipment. For all other products child rates apply to those 17 years and under.
No one likes feeling clueless! Lessons are the fastest way to improve your skills on the snow and lose the clueless feeling. If you are a total beginner they will get your confidence up in half the time you would if you try to learn as you go. And if you haven’t skied for a while, a refresher should help avoid any embarrassing ego based trips to the medical centre.
Group lessons do not need to be pre-booked, however it is essential to arrive early on the first day and allow about one hour for ticketing and rental fitting. Group lesson times are generally mid morning and early afternoon and run for approx. 2 hours. Whether you are a complete beginner or require a refresher course, there are packages which will cover it all. Here are some options.
The most popular product is a one day ‘Starter‘ Pack or ’First Timer’ pack which gives beginners 2 x lessons on the first day, rental equipment and access to the novice lifts. Here are some options.
If you are skiing for 3 or 5 days then you should also consider our exclusive Easy As packages in Queenstown and Mt Hutt. Including Transfers, lessons, clothing, equipment and lift passes, they are the perfect way for beginners to get their confidence up. Find out more here.
So check out all our lesson options. It is definitely worth the extra investment!
Ski Express has plenty of options available for hiring rental equipment. Some can be hired in town and taken to the mountain and brought back to your accommodation each day. Or others can be hired on the mountain and left there each day to make getting around off the snow a little less awkward. The choice is yours. Best to speak to one of our Ski Specialists when making a booking about what option will be best for you if you are unsure. For those wanting to lock something in here are some options you can consider.
When collecting your rental equipment, a credit card or drivers license is required as ID. Each ski field has a storage area where you can leave shoes, bags etc. The cost is approx. $5 per day. When fitting into your ski/snowboard boots we recommend wearing one pair of thick un-ribbed socks. Take an extra pair of thin socks as a backup.
Once you are sorted with your equipment you can leave any bags/shoes in the secure storage facility (a minimal fee applies). The mountain staff can direct you to where this is located. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and make the kids visit the loo! Look for an exit and follow the white stuff. You might want to familiarise yourself with the trail map too, even if you are a beginner. It will indicate where the beginner area is. You need to look for the Green lines. Green = Beginner. Blue = got a clue. Black = Hard Core peeps ski here. If in doubt look for a mountain staff member. They are there to help you have a great day. If you are having a lesson make sure you are in the meeting spot 10 minutes prior so you will be all set and ready to go!
Trained patrol staff monitor on-slope safety constantly. In the event of an accident, each ski base has a medical centre as well as access to a doctor.
So go hard knowing that there should be someone there to pick up the pieces if it all turns bad!
Each of the ski fields have cafe facilities offering a large variety of snacks and meals. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and to keep a few chocolate bars hidden in your ski jacket to keep you and the kids going. It is very important that you start your day with a hearty breakfast.
It is not wrong to want a break from the kids! Especially when fresh powder runs beckon!
Here’s some guidance if you are looking at ways you can offload the kids, where they still have fun and you get guilt free time to yourself on your preferred mountain!

It is a group tour but you don’t have to have your own group. Think Contiki on the snow and you have a better idea. Bring your mates or just yourself.
Stay in a dorm room, upgrade to a private room if the sharing thing scares you or hob knob it in a hotel if the backpacker bit is a little beneath you!
All you need is a passion for snow and a willingness to embrace having fun with others. Singles, couples, or anything in between. You are never too old….but you can be too young, no one under 18 sorry young uns.
We provide a sensational Ski Express host to help you throughout the trip and you might just have the best time of your life.

The short answer is YES! The long answer is below!
Ski Express is trying to step into the 21st Century so YES you can finally buy some open dated products on our website. This is things like lift passes, lessons, gear hire, clothing hire, some sightseeing and anything you don’t have to use on a specific date. We will still have to process your booking online and send you some vouchers but you don’t even have to talk to us if you don’t want to. Just choose what you want, choose how you want to pay for it and we will look after the rest.
Of course we would love it if you did still want to talk to us as our Ski Specialists are full of local knowledge to ensure you enjoy the best NZ snow holiday possible.
Unfortunately with packages, accommodation, airfares and car hire we aren’t quite there yet. These things we will need to get a request from you and go off and check availability, although we have loads of products on allotments that allow us to tell you straight away whether it is available for your preferred dates. Our booking system just doesn’t like talking to our website yet!
Make sense? We hope so.
If you want a tailormade holiday, then the best way to do this is via a Custom Express Quote. We will work with you, take out any confusion and help you create your perfect New Zealand snow holiday.
Pretty much exactly what it says.
At Ski Express we are a flexible bunch! We appreciate that it is unnerving when you shop online and have to pay upfront if not everything you are looking to purchase is instantly available and we know snow holidays can involve a lot of different parts that need to be available.
To alleviate some of this concern, we give you the opportunity to book things online with us and then, once we let you know all the parts of your holiday are sorted, we give you 10 days to pay a deposit of $110 per person. Final payment will then be due 30 days prior to you departing for your trip.
It is like Laybying your holiday!
If you are booking inside 30 days until you leave though, things get a little less flexible. We basically need payment straight away as soon as your holiday components are confirmed so we have time to properly process your booking details. So that will be Book Now and pay pretty soon please.
We wanted you to have a super secure way to pay online with us.
Ski Express uses the DPS Payment Express Payment Gateway for its online credit card and debit card transactions. DPS processes online credit card transactions securely for thousands of merchants globally, providing a safe and secure online payment service. Payments are validated and authorised immediately, however transactions will not be completed until Ski Express has confirmed your itinerary requests. We do not have access to your full card number, this credit card payment is secured by DPS. DPS have bank grade security. All transaction details are stored in their PCI-DSS compliant Data Centre. DPS Payment Express Software is certified with over 200 banks globally. Visit www.paymentexpress.com for more information on online credit card payments.
