Mt Ruapehu is the largest of three magnificent volcanoes that make up the Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage Park. The 'dual' tital is a rarity and is in recognition of Tongariro's awesome natural beauty and cultural signifiance.

Located in the central North Island, only four hours drive from either Auckland or Wellington, Mt Ruapehu is home to New Zealand's two largest ski areas: Whakapapa and Turoa.

Whakapapa Village, the location of the famous and majestic Chateau Tongariro, provides the closest accommodation to the Whakapapa ski area at a short 6km drive. 40 minutes further south and 17kms from Turoa ski area is the township of Ohakune, the lively snow sports and apres-ski centre of the Mt Ruapehu region.
